Golden Globe Winner Owen Cooper Reflects on Awkward Acting Class Days as the ‘Only Boy

Owen Cooper won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television at the 2026 awards, becoming the youngest ever to claim the honor at just 16. He received the award for his portrayal of Jamie Miller in Adolescence at the 83rd annual ceremony on Sunday, January 11.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Cooper reflected on his journey:

“Wow, standing here with a Golden Globe, it doesn’t feel real at all,” he began. “What an incredible journey my family and I have been through. I never knew if I’d be good or awful, so I took a risk and joined drama classes. I was the only boy there—it was embarrassing—but I pushed through, and I’m still very much learning every day from the people around me.”

He also thanked Netflix and supporters before closing with a nod to the future: “Bring on 2026. You’ll never walk alone.”

Adolescence is a limited series that explores the unraveling of a family after their 13-year-old son is accused of murdering a schoolmate. The show tackles themes of toxic masculinity and examines social media’s impact on young people. This marks Cooper’s first Golden Globe nomination and win. His castmate Ashley Walters was also nominated for the same category, with Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty earning nods, while Adolescence competed for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Other nominees included:

  • Billy Crudup for The Morning Show, portraying UBA president Cory Ellison. Crudup’s character navigates romantic tension with Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson alongside Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy. This was Crudup’s third Golden Globe nomination, following nods in 2024 and 2022.
  • Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett in The White Lotus Season 3. Rick’s romantic getaway in Thailand turns suspenseful when he confronts the man he believes killed his father.
  • Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff in The White Lotus Season 3, whose family vacation spirals amid financial investigations. Isaacs was previously nominated in 2008 for The State Within.
  • Tramell Tillman in Severance, playing Seth Milchick, head of the severed floor at Lumon Industries, who encourages Mark S. (Adam Scott) to complete the mysterious Cold Harbor file.
  • Ashley Walters for his role as Detective Luke Bascombe in Adolescence, determined to uncover the truth behind a schoolgirl’s murder and arresting Jamie Miller (Cooper) under suspicion.
