Speaking with host Zuri Hall on Sunday, Jan. 11, Elle, 27, revealed that the sisters have set some ground rules before making their first movie together. When asked if there was a “plan of attack” for working with a sibling, Elle shared that Dakota promised not to play the typical older sister.
“She’s promised me that she’s not gonna boss me around,” Elle said. “That’s what she’s promised… the older sister. You can’t! You have to treat me like a fellow actor.”

Elle also gave a long-awaited update on The Nightingale, which was first announced over six years ago. “In a couple months, we are about to go film. It’s taken a couple years in the making, but… we are finally, really doing it this time,” she said.
Dakota, 31, also spoke with Hall and added her own playful note about acting with Elle. Asked what one thing Elle shouldn’t do on set, Dakota joked, “annoy me too much,” laughing as she spoke.
Set for a 2027 release, The Nightingale is based on Kristin Hannah’s historical fiction novel about two sisters in France at the dawn of World War II. The Fannings previously appeared on screen together playing the same character at different ages in 2001’s I Am Sam, but this marks their first time acting alongside one another.

In a 2019 statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the sisters shared, “As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true. We are so lucky to have our fearless director, Melanie Laurent, to guide us along on the journey. Let’s do this, sister!!”
